We have some more new & exciting UK Hip Hop to speak about, this time Jay Prince. With his much-talked about recent EP release – his debut headline London show was something we didn’t want to miss…
The warehouse feel of the Red Gallery, Shoreditch was a great setting for the young East London MC coming up and doing it his own way. There was a lot of energy in the room and it seemed people really came out to show love and appreciation. We arrived at the venue about 9pm to an overly excited warm up DJ going in like it was prime time (though the crowd didn’t seem too bothered). There was cause for concern that he might wear out the audience before the headline act, but this didn’t seem to end up being the case. So all good!
At around 9:30/9:45pm a projecter screen came down in front of the stage and played Jay’s short film (about 9mins) that he’d put out not long before the EP was released. It lent itself as a screen for the band to get set up on stage.
Whilst the sound quality lacked any real clarity and was particularly drum heavy, the band held there own and Jay really brought a lot of energy to the stage. His show consisted of a few new tracks and some of the classics that helped to make his name, including some of the IAMNOBODI collabs that are our personal favorites. Although lacking some brass lines the band did well to bring the vibe.
Jay seemed genuinely humbled by the support and extremely passionate about his music. This passion was equally reflected by the audience with there engagement levels, singing choruses and people screaming out “Jay we love you”. The atmospshere was all love. Whilst Jay has a US tour marked out, we are excited to see this young cat grow!
