California’s best kept secret is undoubtedly Soulection, the record label and radio show pushing forward-thinking music for the post Hip-Hop generation, covering all forms of beats and breaks but with a decidedly soulful aesthetic. Somewhere between classic Dilla and current trap music lies the production ethos of the Soulection collective – futuristic, glitchy trap-hop electronica. Soulection are all about pushing the producers – for the most part their releases feature instrumental beat-making in the vein of Flylo and Madlib, and with over 200,000 listeners on Soundcloud, they’re bringing those beats to bedrooms, headphones and dance floors worldwide, with a plethora of international talent handpicked by label owner Joe Kay.

Alessia Cara makes the ‘Ikes Rap’ sample her own

As of yet we don’t know much about the lady delivering the vocal, but we do know how special this new single is from Alessia Cara.

Back in 1971 a certain Isaac Hayes released his 5th studio album, Black Moses, on this album was a track that was to become famously sampled by Glory Box in the mid 1990’s and used in countless advertising campaigns since. The record we are talking about is ‘Ikes Rap’, one of the most seductive descending basslines you are ever likely to hear.

Julio Bashmore announces release date for his debut album

We have been talking about this album for the best part of a year and part of us wondered if it was ever going to come!

The first we heard of a new album was back in 2014 when ‘Simple Love’ hit Soundcloud, we were told an album was coming but with no official release dates. Later that year we were hit with the disco throw back, ‘Rhythm of Auld’ and finally Gilles Peterson provided us with a World Exclusive of ‘Knockin Boots’ on BBC Radio 6 Music.
