Haitus Kaiyote / Taylor McFerrin: 4th July Islington Assembly Hall

This double headliner gig (in our opinion) was always going to be amazing. Selling out in such a short space of time you know that only the true fans were going to be in attendance. On arrival, this felt very much the case. The atmosphere was electric. Filled with fans and many producers and artists (we personally spotted the likes of Tom Misch, Jordan Rakei, Jay Prince, Ego Ella May and Sabira Jade to name a few) who came out to share pure love, and learn a thing or two I imagine.

Hiatus

Despite a fuse blowing half way through Taylor’s second track and cutting the sound completely, the duo (Taylor and drummer) kept the energy high and did not let it sway their vibe. They moved through the set nicely with a guest appearance from Nai Palm on “The Antidote”. She humbly stepped out to roars of appreciation from the energetic crowd.

After a quick change over, Hiatus were on and proceeded to belt there way through two albums worth of material. A longer set than I expected from the band but almost 2 hours later the crowd were still with them, singing along, with lots of call and answer moments. Hiatus didn’t end up finishing until around 12am. A few people had to leave, probably due to train restrictions but this didn’t sway the hardcore supporters. Definitely one of my gigs of the year and one that will stay in mind for a while to come, these guys have set the bench mark for cats on the scene right now.
