In any scene it would be a dream come true for an artist to get snapped up by a major record label and begin enjoying the luxuries that follow, however, what if it doesn’t work out, can they just stroll back into the underground scene that previously adored them?
One man who is finding this out first hand is Jahmaal Fyffe, aka Chip. At 16 he exploded onto the underground scene after releasing ‘Who are you’ which was accompanied by a dark, stripped back video which is now sitting at over 3 million hits on YouTube. He was accepted immediately and feared by many seasoned MC’s, this kid had an insane flow, sincere lyrical content, a natural tone and the confidence to bring all of this to the microphone.
During his career he has had eleven top-ten singles, his debut album hit No.2 in the UK Albums chart, he has won a MOBO, collaborated with the likes of Emily Sande and shared a stage with Chris Brown.
Chip announced earlier this year that he is back with a new project and it would be released on his own label, Cash Motto. Once Chip had announced he was back on the scene a few other MC’s didn’t hesitate in going for him, it doesn’t seem the underground accept the once ‘Oopsie Daisy’ Pop star back onto ‘their’ scene.
But why? It feels the likes of Kano, Wiley, Dizzee or even Wretch can flutter between the two worlds whenever they like. Saying that, I think Tinie would have exactly the same issues if he tried to step into a cypher with the likes of Giggs & Bugzy Malone.
But we think we have the answer, and it’s down to timing…
Chip is just that bit too young to have been popular during the golden years of Garage into the birth of Grime, he was simply too late on the scene to be given the UK Garage/Grime Hall Of Fame pass that some of the above names have achieved. Wiley could rap the Macarena with Jedward for all we care and the following week be invited onto a 1xtra panel to discuss the Meek & Drake beef, Why? LEGENDARY status.
Chip is far from being finished, his hustle, grind & determination are incredible and he isn’t going anywhere, at least without one hell of a fight. He just needs to find out who is audience are.
And let’s not take anything away from Chip, any rapper fighting it out on the Grime scene would kill for the career he has had!
Chip has always had a clan image, we don’t really need to see him in beef but it seems like that’s the only thing that will gain him the respect her deserves in the street.
